publication guide register

All NSW agencies are required by the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (GIPA Act) to publish a publication guide by 1 January 2011.

Under section 22 of the GIPA Act, agencies must notify the Information Commissioner before adopting or amending a publication guide and must, if requested to do so by the Information Commissioner, consult with the Commissioner on their proposed publication guide.

The Office of the Information Commissioner (OIC) maintains a publication guide register, which lists whether or not an agency has submitted a publication guide for the OIC’s consideration. As part of its consultation function, the OIC also provides comments and feedback about publication guides to the agency.

The publication guide register lists whether this consultation process is ongoing or finalised. The OIC encourages agencies to publish their publication guide on their website after the consultation process is finalised.

The OIC recommends that agencies check the publication guide register to confirm that the OIC has received their publication guide. The publication guide register is updated every Monday.

The OIC has produced a knowledge update, Good practice for creating publication guides, to assist agencies by establishing a number of good practice measures regarding publication guides.

If you have any questions or require any additional information about publication guides, please call the OIC on 1800 INFOCOM (1800 463 626) or email at oicinfo@oic.nsw.gov.au.
